Lisa Anderson was the sixth dean to lead the School of International and Public Affairs, established in 1946. Also at Columbia, she has served as Chair of the Political Science Department as well as Director of the Middle East Institute. An eminent scholar of the Middle East and North Africa, Lisa Anderson specializes in state formation and regime change, on which she has published numerous articles and several books including Pursuing Truth, Exercising Power (Columbia UP, 2003). She is also a member of the Council on Foreign Relations and serves on the boards of the Social Science Research Council, the Carnegie Council on Ethics and International Affairs, and Human Rights Watch.
