A Public Lecture by Professor Vitaly Naumkin
President of Moscow’s Institute of Oriental Studies, Russian Academy of Sciences
Thursday, October 28, 2010
Professor Naumkin began his lecture by discussing the significant population of Muslims living in Russia, the Central Asian republics, and Eastern Europe. In the Central Asian republics Muslims comprise the majority, and within Russia they constitute a significant minority. He then provided a condensed history of Islam in Central Asia and Eastern Europe from the Islamic conquests up through the Communist era. He described the different faith schools (madhabs) of Islam that were adopted in these areas and the relationship between these Muslim communities and the emerging influence of the Ottomans and the Russians.
Professor Naumkin later discussed the challenges that Muslim communities in Russia and the Central Asian republics are facing today. He briefly touched upon the conflict in Chechnya and described his own experience meeting with a Chechen leader during the course of his research.
